    Zoom H4n Digital Recorder

    Description:

Zoom H4n is the most sophisticated portable handheld recorder with new features and improved user experience at every level. Among its many new features, Zoom’s H4n offers superior, built-in X/Y stereo condenser mics that allow variable recording patterns at either 90° or 120°. Higher quality audio capture through its new, digitally controlled, high-quality mic preamp, the ability to use internal and external mics simultaneously for 4 channel recording, a large LCD screen, more intuitive interface and onboard reference speaker will take the user’s recording experience to the next level.

    World-class recording for everyone

Representing the next level of professional recording performance, the H4n delivers superior audio quality and dramatically improves the user experience. Zoom’s most sophisticated handheld recorder to date will amaze, no matter the application.

Unique X/Y mic design captures perfect stereo images

The H4n’s onboard X/Y stereo condenser mics are arranged with the right and left mics on the same axis. This design ensures that the mics are always equidistant from the sound source for perfect localization with no phase shifting. Frequency response remains uniform throughout your recording. The result is great stereo recording with natural depth and accurate imaging every time.

The mics also adjust for variable recording patterns at either 90° or 120°. Our unique design lets you rotate each mic capsule from 90° (standard) to 120° (wide-angle) stereo for the ultimate versatility in any recording situation.

Why four channels are better than two

Everyone knows that proper miking is essential to making a great recording. The H4n is the only handheld recorder that allows you to record on four channels simultaneously by using its onboard mics with either external mics or direct inputs. You can then use its built-in mixer to blend the channels for perfectly balanced recordings. Now your recordings can be richer than ever before.

Or, to get a great recording of a live performance, use the H4n’s onboard mics to get a room mix while simultaneously recording a stereo mix from the mixing board for a live recording that is easily one of the best you’ve ever heard.

And for media and filmmakers, the H4n makes it easy to record “high definition” audio at 24-bit/48kHz with booms, handhelds or lavaliers while gathering atmospheric audio with the onboard mics. The H4n also supports Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) so your recorded files carry time stamp information. You can even set markers (cue points) during recording or playback.

For even more versatility, the H4n also features a Mid-Side stereo decoder that allows you to utilize this classic microphone setup. The H4n converts the mid and side channels into a conventional stereo (L/R) signal for even more versatility. It’s only found on the H4n.

    It’s all in the preamp

The H4n’s new mics and four channel recording ability, in combination with our new, digitally controlled, high-quality preamplifier renders audio so precise, you’ll sound like you recorded in a world-class studio. And this new preamp means you can make recording level adjustments on the fly. Of course, an automatic level setting function is also built-in to optimize your levels as quickly as the situation requires.

High resolution, 24-bit/96kHz linear PCM recording

Choose up to 24-bit/96-kHz linear PCM WAV files for audio resolution that surpasses DVD quality. Or, when maximum recording time with smaller file sizes is desired, select a variety of MP3 formats from 320 kbps down to 48 kpbs to produce smaller files suitable for web or e-mail distribution.

Secure your digital memories on SD and SDHC cards

The H4n uses compact SD or high-capacity SDHC memory cards of up to 32GB for over 15 hours of recording time at 24-bit/96kHz. Or, using MP3 format at 128 kpbs, get over 550 hours of recording time on one card.

    It’s about the music.

For musicians and songwriters, the H4n is also a user-friendly, multi-track studio (MTR) that records at CD quality, 16-bit/44.1kHz resolution. Plug in your guitar or bass and use the H4n’s classic amp models to inspire your creativity and find tone perfection during your recording sessions.

The MTR mode allows simultaneous 2-track recording and 4-track playback. With this feature, you can sketch songs by overdubbing vocals and instruments with ease. Level and panning can be adjusted individually for each track on the built-in mixer, and you can even do a mixdown right on the H4n. Perfect for pre-production sessions with the band.

The H4n offers a choice of 50 studio-quality DSP effects including compressor, chorus, delay, and reverb. These onboard studio effects, along with its tuner and metronome make the H4n very musician friendly.

The H4n’s phrase trainer capability makes learning new songs easy with an adjustable playback feature that changes the speed from 50 to 150 percent, while maintaining pitch. Or use its center cancel feature to suppress audio that is recorded with center imaging. And because the H4n lets you alter pitch without changing playback speed, you can choose source material, suppress the center audio and use it as a backing track while recording a vocal or guitar track.

    It’s a USB audio interface

The H4n also functions as a USB audio interface, letting you record directly to either a Mac or PC. Use your favorite recording software or the bundled Cubase LE 4 from Steinberg, so you can start to produce and edit your recording right out of the box.

Everyone likes surprises, but not while you’re recording

You can set your H4n to automatically record whenever sound above a designated level is detected. This ensures that you capture everything of importance while minimizing blank sections such as when recording a conference or lecture. The H4n can also be set to continuously record the most recent two seconds of audio in memory. Now, you’ll never miss the beginning of anything you want to record, even if it begins suddenly.

    Brains with a body too

The H4n has a new rubberized, shock resistant chassis that improves durability while reducing handling noise. A large, 1.9 inch LCD screen with backlit graphic display shows all the tracking information at a glance and makes it easy to navigate the functions of the unit. The H4n even has a built-in reference speaker to let you check recordings without earphones.

    Faster file transfer

The H4n is now a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed device, meaning that files can be transferred to your computer at the highest rate available. Then use recording software for editing, create your own original CDs, post your recordings on your myspace page or send out your recordings by e-mail… the possibilities are endless.

Stamina mode extends battery life to 11 hours

For situations where you require maximized, continuous recording operation you can select stamina mode that effectively doubles battery life, letting you record continuously for approximately 11 hours in 16-bit/44.1kHz linear PCM format.

    Fully loaded

A 1 GB SD card, windscreen, mic clip adapter, AC adapter, USB cable, protective case and Cubase LE recording software are included with your H4n. The windscreen is especially helpful to reduce wind noise. The mic clip adapter works perfectly when attaching the unit to a standard mic stand, or you can use the built-in tripod mount with a standard camera tripod.

    Go remote with the RC4

An optional remote control (RC4) gives you access to a range of functions including recording start, play, stop, fast forward/reverse, recording level adjustment, and input source switching. It is also useful for preventing any handling noise.

The H4n is the epitome of sophistication made simple. For anyone who needs professional recording capability with extraordinary versatility, the H4n will give you the ability to capture everything with the clarity and resolution previously found only in the world’s finest recording studios. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to make world-class recordings, wherever you are in the world.

Excellent recorder. I have both the older H4 and this H4n. The only difference Ive seen is that my older H4 seems to work better as the sound interface to my computer. Apparently there are issues with AMD processors on laptops with the newer H4n. Also, registering and unlocking CUbaseLE which comes with the recorder was as royal pain. I did get it unlocked though on it works great on my computer. If youre a musician you cant go wrong with this recorder and the included sound processing software that comes with it. I use this every week. I think the newer H4n on auto rec level records better then the older H4, although both of them are great.

I use this as an external recorder for sound when filming. When hooked up to a lav mic and utilizing the built-in speakers and 4-ch audio function you can get amazing sound with plenty of extra tracks if needed. For the price this thing cant be beat. The only downside is that it does seem a little flimsy, but if treated properly I dont see there being any problems at all. The interface takes a few minutes to get used to but once you figure it out navigating the menus is a breeze. Highly recommended for any lower budget audio recording.

I agree with most of the other reviewers, this little recorder packs a jumbo sized punch. I have used it to record video soundtrack with my Canon HV30 by plugging the H4n line-out into the HV30 mic-input using a 1/8 connector. The quality of the captured audio is at least 100 times better than the HV30s built in microphones; fantastic. The stereo image/depth/quality with birdsong...gurgling streams, footsteps etc etc is astounding, a revelation coming from on camera mics.
Importantly, Do NOT record soundtrack with the H4n AUTO mode turned on; its important to set the levels manually (65%-75% works great for most stuff), and then keep an eye on the levels. I use slight compression on the incoming signal to tame peaks. If you use AUTO mode, and start recording in near silence (often the case), the recorder sets the pre-amp gain to 100% and you get a hissy signal. Even dialing this back to 90% would give you much much better signal, but 100% just sucks. Go Manual.
Plus all the other XLR connectors, 4 track recorder stuff, tuner, metronome works just great too. Like everyone says.

The main thing I want to say is Zoom Customer Support is GOOD! One of the reasons I bought the H4n was to use it as a Audio Interface/SoundCard with my Laptop for recording/music production while traveling. Imagine my surprise when I all I got was crackling and dropouts on windows 7 64 bit (I was bummed). BUT after 3 or 4 emails with Zoom Customer support, we had solved the problem (turned off the wireless card) and audio quality over the USB connection is excellent. The H4n driver co-exists happily with MOTU firewire drivers, and works great with Ableton, Sonar, Cubase, Vegas Pro.

It sucks batteries quickly when not in stamina-mood.

-Stamina mood- is good for recording audio with the on-board mics but it has some operating mood limitations.. If you are working with a shotgun-mic like I do (Im using it for production sound and filming with a Canon D5MII) you have to use the normal mood..

-4 Stars- only because of the rapid battery consuming otherwise Im very happy with the sound quality and it is very easy to use. I took it out of the box and was up and running in few minutes..
-The quality of the Zoom H4n itself is very good and solid.

I use a rechargeable battery kit -around $13 your site prime- and I solved battery problem. If I would have to shoot all day with no interruptions using -normal mood- I charge my 4 batteries + extra 2 to be safe and the game is done.

-Production sound with the Canon D5 Mark II:
After carefully see whats on the market I decided to have top quality sound for my productions without spending a fortune nor hiring professional sound technicians.
    *built-in Canon D5MII mic*
There are devices you can connect straight to the camera for more then $300 that work with experimental firmwire AT YOUR OWN RISK and apparently they offer good sound quality although you are limited to one stereo track (could be a mix of two mics connected to one of these devices which connects to the camera body using the Mic input) and have to take a $2500 risk..
If you simply connect a mic to the camera, no matter how good your mic is you will get LOT OF BACKGROUND NOISE which is understandable since the camera wasnt originally designed to shoot pro video..
The capability of the Zoom H4n of recording 4 TRACKS simultaneously (2 mono with the input mics XLR and one stereo with the on board mic its pretty good.. Lots of good functionality such as Low cut reduction and custom recording adjustments on the different tracks.

    Conclusions:
If you are not a sound technician and have no knowledge of sound at all.
If you want to film Features, Shorts, Documentaries, interviews, etc. capturing great sound for your project and you are a one-man-crew or you can count on friend-help to boom for you.
If you dont want to spend a fortune in equipment or pro sound technicians but still want to get TOP QUALITY SOUND.
The Zoom H4n is the way to go.

Certainly it takes sometime to sync the sound in post but it is well worth it when you will hear it loud and clear.

I hope this will be helpful..

First off, Im no professional audio guru. Im a nerd that does outdoor videos with his Canon 5d Mark II.

I dont need to tell you about the technical aspects, but I will say that it does exactly as described. It also comes with a wind blocker so no need to buy one. The audio is great about picking up only the angle of degree you have it set to. I do some beach video and it was important that I didnt pick up a lot of garbage from passerbys, etc. If youre right up on it of course you will hear outside noises but for interviews or specific sounds where your camera is pointed this is perfect. I also bought an adapter so I could put it on the hotshoe of my 5ds which helped. For the price this cant be beat.

I bought my zoom as an openbox/demo unit for $100 off the regular price, full warantee, from a major a/v house, and figured at that price I could not go wrong. I never look back as it being a bad purchase with the heavy discount since everything was perfect in the box, and the quad channel recording is a great feature to have around (for those wondering about the abiguity if you must use the builtin mics for the other two channels, the answer is no, they have a 3.5 mm TRS jack that kills the internal mics and thus allows you to input 4 mic level signals to be recorded in time sync.

The units microphones can be optimized for different stereo pickup patterns, which again I much appreciate.

    The cons:

You can never turn off the H4ns mic level amps - you get a 1% - 100% attenuator on the front of the amps, but they are still mic level amps. Compare this with the Marantz PMD-661 Marantz PMD661 Portable SD Recorder and you have a 3 way switch - mic w/ 48VDC, mic w/o 48VDC, line - but the marantz lacks the 1/4 TRS combo inputs which I like on the H4n.

Still getting back to the attenuator - the connection goes like this

    int/ext source --> attenuator 1-100% --> mic pre-amp + amplifier noise --> a/d --> SD card
while the marantz has 2 chains:
line level input --> a/d converter --> SD card
mic level input --> amplifier to line level + amplifier noise --> then just like above line in

The net result is that BOTH the PMD-661 and H4n can handle high level line signals, but the H4n first cuts them down to mic level, then internally amplifies them to the recorders standard a/d level. By shutting off this mic amplifier in the marantz you also shut off the noise that comes with the amp, leaving a cleaner signal into the a/d converter. I always try to get line level signals from mixing boards, wireless microphones, etc because I can cut out the extra noise of having the un-needed mic preamp running when I am feeding a line signal to begin with.

One negative that was only recently discovered applies equally to both the H4n and the PMD-661 units - these are part of a category of soft off battery powered devices. This means there is no 0/1 snapswitch that powers the product on, but rather a slider on both units you hold in the power toggle or button to turn them on, afterwhich it returns to neutral. The benefits from this system are that the units can watch their battery life and if they are going to kill your NiMH cells they turn themselves off, which is commendable. Unfortunately, when turned off, they draw a very very small amount of power looking for that ON slideswitch/button to signal turnon. This small amount of power puts a small drain on the batteries while the units are turned off, and you might put your best eneloop cells in there and come back in 3 weeks to find they are 1/3 full now due to the self discharge. I worked with another reviewer on your site regarding this soft off feature and its not just for recorders - flashlights and other battery powered systems that dont have a hard on/off switch (e.g. click on - click off) are all in the same boat - all draining their batteries while not being used. Its part of the design and the best solution is to get the largest NiMH cells (I prefer sanyo 2700 mah conventional) and have them on a trickle charger waiting for when you need to use your device.

So to sum up the H4n, its one of the most innovative recorders made today with features far ahead of the competition. Its remote Zoom RC4 Wired Remote Control For Zoom H4n duplicates the face of buttons on the unit and even includes an extension cord if you need to go long distances. Unlike the PMD-661 which I had to make a case from an old microphone case, the Zoom comes with a plastic case ready to go. Both the PMD 661 and H4n have 1/4-20 tripod mounts on the bottom if you want to snap them into a tripod then use their internal mics. The zoom adds an oversized wind protector that covers the entire microphone array.

Id give the H4n one more star if I could route the signal around the mic preamps when driving it with line level inputs. This is good practice in the recording / mixing industry and one of the main reasons I default to the marantz if I dont know what signal I will get a copy of to record. The H4ns quad recording ability is a great addition for videographers. Id recommend you get an azden cam-3 small mixer to help level things out in the field and output a 3.5 mm signal for the H4n. AZDEN CAM-3 On-Camcorder Mini Audio Mixer The price on the H4n is great - when I had the open box special I just could not walk away from it and I have no regrets. Its been a true performer. Finally, the H4n has many features for musicians and small bands (like a metronome and 4 ch recording) to capture jam sessions.

I tried recording a few audio and it has been wonderful. But I am still having issues with couple of things. When I connect the output to my 5DMarkII there is a hissing sound and somewhere it is mentioned that I need a 25 dB attenuation cable or something. Not sure as of now on how to get the sound to record directly to the camera. I have the latest firmware on the camera. Secondly, they should do something about the windscreen. They should bundle the redhead windscreen with this recorder. The one provided with the product is pretty much useless to my knowledge. Need to do some testing with external microphones before I can provide a decent update.

I have never owned a portable recorder before so I have limited experience. Having said that, I am astonished at this little jewels capabilities. I read reviews which said that it is hard to use, but if you can read and follow simple directions, I see no problem there. In fact I would say that it is quite easy to use. The onboard speaker is not great but plugging it in to a good set of speakers solves that problem. It is so much fun to play with. I would highly recommend it.

Im helping a friend with a film shoot. Its tedious work, but if something breaks or goes wrong, guess what? Youve now got actors and crew and hangers-on just sitting around, stewing.

The film is being shot in high-def, but the excellent camcorder is not burdened with doing the sound. The Zoom H4n Handy Recorder is. Weve got it hooked up to a boom with a shotgun mike.

This is an excellent recorder. It handles recording the actors in exemplary fashion. The display is simple enough to be pretty intuitive, with very little instruction. Now Im not going to say that you can go out and buy this recorder and start knocking on Steven Spielbergs door. This is not a mixing board with multiple tracks one can lay down. This is a four-channel recorder, and for filming, its great. We have a young guy who wants to be a director (who doesnt) hanging around the set. The sound director took pity on him and let him run the recorder for a while on non-critical shoots. He picked it up in a couple of minutes, and did pretty well holding the boom and running the recorder.

Ive been pretty impressed with the capability of this recorder, and the sound is excellent. I can only attest to its versatility on the set; Ive not tried it with recording a band, or bird calls or whatever. But I can tell you that this recorder is just about perfect for location shooting. Combined with the shotgun mike, it works really well. Now if we can just get the actors to learn their lines better...

Highly recommended. Its worth every penny of its very reasonable cost.

i havent gone total sound pro with this yet but for all the little things i have been using it for (childrens sounds, sound effects collections, office chit chats, podcast sound bytes etc.) this thing packs a PUNCH! I used it recently to record my daughters small nursery rhymes career (fingers crossed) the sound is amazingly pro. I am going to soon enough start using the device for actual live recordings. But what really amazed me was the small little stand that came with it -- which enables the entire device to be a mic. Guess what this little plastic stand works perfectly too with a small Point and Shoot camera like Canon PowerShot SD750 7.1MP Digital Elph Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Black) This little stand is perfect when your trying to chase teh kids along with teh zoom to record the voice and the sound and video!

Ive been using the Zoom H4N to record separate audio tracks for my Canon 7D primarily due to the auto gain control on the 7D. When compared to the onboard audio the difference is amazing. This picks up much more detail, separates the stereo channels much better than the onboard mic. The H4N allows me to monitor recording levels, move the mic away from the camera to eliminate sound from the focusing and lens stabilization and I can add a wind screeen to virtually elimiate wind noise. Sound quality is great, plenty of options for adding 4 channel sound with XLR / 1/4 combo jack. This means you can have directional mics for voice and still use stereo mics for ambient and mix and monitor them in the H4N too to reduce the amount of work in post. Line out makes it easy to use as external mic for the 7D too, especially with sturdy tripod mount.

Im delighted with this recorder. My previous audio recorder was a Sony Minidisc recorder - its great to be digital now. I found the recorder easy to use. I added a RedHead windscreen, which works much better than the Zooms foam windscreen. My only complaint (easily resolved) is that when I hold the recorder in my hand, the mic is very sensitive to movements of my hand. The solution is to hold the recorder by the mic stand (the short stick that comes with it).

I love the recorder, I use to create samples for remixing --- however it was impossible at first to get the audio downloaded and able to listen to it in an easy format.

I found a tool named vortex zoom encoder which I bought for 30.00 bucks and now I am able to easily listen and convert to formats I can mix/play while DJing, little bit of a pain at first but finally got the hang of it.

This recorder works great for recording rough or scrub takes. The stero mics are excellent and the overall controls are simple and easy to use. Downloading to the PC DAW is USB and also works great (just like any USB drive). The 4 channel also works good so your I can record 2 channels from my ToneBone acoustic pre amp and 2 from the stero mics.
Also works great for home recording as you can capture your foundation acoustic takes in other rooms without dragging all your big mics and recording gear there. The metronome feature is also great for recording the first acoustic foundation tracks in any room.
Ive got a larger PC recording system with several good condensor mics, but this little device is an awesome addtion even if you just use it to sort out ideas..

This is hands down the most affordable audio recorder in its class.
I didnt originally think it was that great as I was misinformed that you couldnt adjust the audio levels individually for each channel. I bought it anyway, I red the manual and I love it. You can record to 4 channels at the time and adjust the levels individually which is absolutely awesome. And for the price... you cant beat it.

I saw that quite a few of the less than stellar reviews stated that the only real problem was a lack of Windows 7 64-bit drivers. They can be found here : [...]

If you are looking to buy this unit, you can ignore the driver complaints :)
