After being disappointed with a lot of new wave music bands (Arcade fire and Vampire Weekend comes to mind), I listened to this CD, nonchalantly.
Well, the first piece just gives you a joy that I have rarely felt in recent times.
The last time, I got this feeling was after listening to Goldfrapp.
The rest of the CD is easy listening without too much pretension. One of the music bands to watch for.

This is one of the best debuts to come out for years. Simple, beautiful music and great duets. To vinyl is also very well packaged and features bonus material.

Fantastic album - never heard of this band until mercury awards - but songs are really relaxing and atmospheric - a good cd to listen to at the end of the day with a glass of wine!

What makes this album interesting is the guitar work--spare, yet not one unnecessary note. However, the singing is breathy and the lyrics forgettable.

This is an interesting minimalist cool Cd with echoes of Joy Division (and, therefore, New Order), the early Cure, the Bristol bands like Portishead and most of all The Durutti Column. Some of the negative reviewers have criticized both vocalists as being technically deficient. They are missing the point. The sparse conversationalist singing suits both lyrics and music perfectly. The XX have made one of 2009s best debuts.

Been sitting with this for about six months. Have returned to it frequently and each time it has not disappointed. Just listened to NPRs first ever dance music review with an open mind, yet none of those featured artists music makes my body move the way XX does. This isnt club music, but its informed by club music. Theres none of the bombastic thumbs, instead theres a sinewy thread formed by simple guitar riffs, similar to the Cures use of guitars but with none of the anthemic quality, and simple tight drum beats and synth lines, with sexy male and female vocals.
I recently gave an old fav a whirl, Everything But The Girls The Walking Wounded, and found a parallel connection to this recording. (I like the band Faithless for similar reasons.) Both make the body want to move, but are founded on space and possibilities rather than pre-formulated club sounds. But then, clubs arent necessarily about subtleties are they?

Heres hoping that xx stick around, make it through the inevitable indie backlash and sophomore slump, and are still making music in a decade. This isnt a great album, but it shows that they have something special, they just havent realized it yet.
