Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2
Description:
In The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers, Scott walks readers through the basics of Lightroom use, leading them to a brilliantly devised and super efficient digital photography workflow that dramatically improves productivity and allows photographers to spend less time processing photos and more time shooting them.
Written in concert with Adobe's development of the Photoshop Lightroom 2 Beta, The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers - by #1 bestselling computer and technology author, Scott Kelby - is the most complete and concise Lightroom "how-to" book for digital photographers of all skill levels.
Throughout the book Scott shares his personal camera and Lightroom settings, as well as the studio-tested techniques he's developed for his own photography workflow. The book is written in his trademark step-by-step, plain English style, and because he knows what really works and what doesn't, he isn't shy to tell you flat out which tools to use, which to avoid, and why. This allows digital photographers of any skill level to jump right in using Lightroom like a pro from the very start, sidestepping a lot of the frustrations that typically haunt those unfamiliar with new applications…especially those as powerful as Lightroom.
What really sets The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers apart from other Lightroom books on the market are the last two bonus chapters where Scott answers the questions, "In exactly what order am I supposed to do things in Lightoom," and "Where does Photoshop fit in to the mix?" Both chapters start with an on-location photo shoot, including full details on the equipment, camera settings, and lighting techniques. Readers then witness as he takes the photos from each shoot through the entire workflow process, to the final output of the 16"x20" prints. And, because he incorporates Photoshop seamlessly right into this workflow, you'll learn some of the latest Photoshop techniques for portrait and landscape photography as well.
If you're one of those people who learns best by actually doing the projects yourself; who learns best without all the complicated technical explanations and confusing jargon, and if you really want to start using Lightroom today to unlock the productivity secrets of "The new digital photography workflow,"---there is no faster, more "straight-to-the-point" or more fun way to learn than this groundbreaking new book, and you are absolutely going to love it!

This book helped me understand a lot when it came to lightroom
It is colorfully illustrated for the readers with many examples.
They break it down for you step by step.
I would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in learning the basics of lightroom.

I got the book before the software arrived and looked it over. I read the foreword and this fella is the kind of person that we should all aspire to be.
After getting the software and following his guidelines on how to arrange my pictures and folders, I installed the software and started using LR2 right away. Ive programmed computers for years, but Im not a pro at graphic anything, so having this guide was invaluable for me. I can honestly say that I never would have figured out how to use the features properly at all were it not for the first two chapters. Im already comfortable with what Ive done and look forward to learning more.
His writing style is easy to understand and guides me from one task to the next just like it flows in the program. Hes obviously thought out his approach to workflow and benefits me, the reader, as he teaches me what to do and what to decide for myself, and more importantly, what to watch out for! I cant count how many pieces of software Ive had to figure out on my own, only to make one misstep after another before finally arriving at a working solution. His book has already saved me hours and Im only an eighth of the way through it!
I recommend this book.

I have nver been one to read or follow any Manual or Instructions but with Lightroom 2 I am always using it when I am using the program. I have found it invaluable & would be completely lost without it I have done a lot of photos using it.

No one likes Scott Kelby more than I do. Im a Kelby Kool-Aid drinker from way back. I dont just *think* Scott is the best...I *know* hes the best. Unfortunately though, I get the feeling that he rushed his way through this book just a little bit...especially at the beginning. Almost as if he had someone else write the first few chapters, and then he took over for the rest of the book.
When I say the book feels rushed...Im not saying theres not enough detail...Im saying that much of the detail...especially in the early part of the book relating to how to bring in your images and get started with LightRoom is, well...confusing and less-than helpful. Could have used some thoughtful editing...and rethinking of how to start the book...how to write about setting up libraries and collections, etc.
I finally gave up and found some web-site resources that provided better explanations for getting started...then returned to the book... and then once he got into using the Develop and other modules, the book picked up speed, and from that point on its vintage Scott Kelby...funny (as always)...goofy (of course)...and very helpful. Im rating it at 4 stars, but if possible I would have said 3-1/2. Definitely not up to Scotts usual.

Bought on recommendation from a friend as I began to use Lightroom. Without this book, I would be lost and frustrated using LR for sure. Certainly getting the most out of the program with the book.

I love this book!
As a backdrop, let me say this... to call myself an aspiring photographer would still probably overstate my talents. Ive read both Volume 1 and 2 of Kelbys Digital Photographer books, which had great hints, and work well for me. In my professional life Im a scientist, and the creative aspects dont come naturally, so Im looking for a recipe when it comes to photography (I know, you can only get so far with step-by-step instructions).
When it comes to using Lightroom, Kelbys recipe-like, stepwise instructions are perfect! Unlike a previous reviewer suggested, I am NOT unfamiliar with computers. I am, however, unfamiliar with serious photo editing software such as Photoshop Lightroom. Kelby gives a great walk through of the programs functionality, with clear, easy to follow steps. Obviously it is up to the user to take this knowledge and run with it, but as a complete novice at using software like this, I found it to be exactly what I was looking for.
If you already have some idea of how to use Photoshop or similar type programs, this book will probably provide some useful tips, but wont be groundbreaking. If, however, youre like me, and are completely new to such software, and just want to figure out where to start, I highly recommend this book. My photos are already 100 times better just from some easy and minor adjustments that I didnt know how to make before this.

Still working my way through this superb tutorial but with the work on photos it is easy to follow and see the changes etc. that are described. There is so much information that going back to find something might be a problem. I am already using post-it notes to identify parts of the book that I know I will need in the future -- at least until I am familiar with the program. I shall certainly be looking to see if I can make use other Scott Kelby books to improve my photographic experience.

If your into digital image editing before you use Lightroom 2 you need to read this wonderful book by Scott Kelby. He shows you all imaging editing steps that Lightroom 2 can do. It would be almost impossible to learn all the nuances of this software without reading this detailed book.

I have a lot of respect for Scott Kelby. He strikes me as an honest, earnest guy who is truly intent on helping people as he also makes a few bucks with seminars, books, associations and a variety of other moneymaking enterprises. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, there is much that is laudable.
Kelby researches his subjects and, over the years, he has become a better writer. If only he didnt try to be a comedian as well - but Ive learned to skip over his lame attempts at humor. Yes, I know, some people like his attempted jokes: I dont.
I do like his approach for learning the basics of a program, in this case Adobe Photoshop Lightroom2.
Kelby takes you by the hand and walks you through the program, baby step by baby step. Its a great way to learn the basics of a new application, especially one that could be very confusing, such as Lightroom2. Kelby gets you through the basics and little beyond without inflicting pain. It is a good approach and Kelby does it well.
Kelby begins at the beginning (importing your photos), moves into the next logical step of organizing your photos. (Remember, Lightroom2 is at heart a workflow management program.) He then takes a little diversion into customizing your workspace. Chapters 4 through 6 deal with editing, adjusting and correcting images. The rest of the book deals with exporting images, creating slideshows, deciding when to invoke Photoshop and a variety of other topics such as printing and building online photo galleries. Kelby includes two chapters on workflow, one for location portraits and the other for travel. These two chapters are gems because they give you real life examples of how Lightroom2 should be deployed.
Overall, an excellent book and a great introduction to Lightroom2, despite the (in my opinion) lame jokes.

I have a couple of other books writtin by Scott Kelby and all are very informative from the ground up. This books begins with the basics of loading Light Room 2 (LR2), to setting up the behind the scenes working operations of LR2. Scott continues with setting up each stage: Library, Develop, Slide Show, Print and Web.
There are snapshots of the screen as he progresses through the steps that show the highlights the icons that are used. The only problem is the font is very small to read for those with an issue with fine print, but you can tell by the areas circled in red, where hes pointing.
I paired this book with LR2 written by Martin Evening. Some areas are repetitive, but where Scott glides over, Martin has a more in depth approach and Martins layout of the screen shots includes texted highlights.
All in all Scotts book is a keeper and great reference material. I rated it five for because it covers the entire LR2 process to get you started on the right track.

I think this is an outstanding resource. I am still in the midst of reading it, but there is so much information in this guide helping you learn how to make the most of Lightroom. From learning the keystrokes that make your workflow more efficient to understanding the best ways to correct your images in Lightroom, Kelby uses practical examples to help you understand the tools that Lightroom offers. I would definitely recommend the book.

I purchased a few books to help me with using Lightroom, but this one is by far my Go To book when I have a question about Lightroom. This is the first one I reach for and the only one I really need. I enjoy Kelbys style of writing and the easy way he explains things. It is thorough and comprejhensive. This is the one and only book you need to understand LR.

Very comprehensive, yet a with sensible organization. Written in a down to earth style that makes it more like a conversation with a friend rather than a reference book. That makes some of the drudgery parts of Lightroom more fun. Illustrations are many and relevant.
Scott Kelby is a knowledgeable and effective author. Good job.

I purchased this book knowing Kellys writing style from previous books and wanting a baseline understanding for what a new user must know to get Lightroom (LR) up and running. Written for version 2.0, I found the differences between LR versions 2.0 and 2.5 to be minimal and thus this book met all expectations. I was moving over 15,000 images into LR and setting the program up correctly to incorporate this library was easily accomplished using Kelbys first few chapters. This book, coupled with the videos by Chris Orwig ([...]) provided a sound understanding of the program. If you are just getting started with LR, these two sources together will provide the information to generate an efficient workflow and maximize the utility of LR in cataloging and processing images. Kelbys book still sits on my desk and is filled with page markers for quick reference, much like his other books on Photoshop that sit above my desk.

The step by step from start to finish is great. And the book size is great as it is wide and able to spread on the desk while learning in lightroom 2 on your PC / MAC. That is one of the great things about this book as some books are just hard to hold and keep open while learning steps.
