Description:
After being hypnotized by his sister in law, a man begins seeing haunting visions of a girl's ghost and a mystery begins to unfold around her.
Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon) is a blue-collar worker, a family man, the most ordinary guy in the world...who is about to be plunged into a shattering encounter with another world. And it doesn\'t matter that Tom doesn\'t believe in the supernatural. Because something-supernatural has started to believe in Tom. After he is hypnotized at a neighborhood party, Tom changes. He sees things he cant explain and hears voices he cant ignore.
As the horrific visions intensfy, Tom realizes they are pieces of a puzzle, echoes of a crime calling out to be solved. But when his other-worldly nightmares begin coming true, Tom wants out. He desperately tries to rid himself of his eerie, unwanted powers - only to be seized by an irresistible compulsion to dig deeper and deeper into the mystery that is consuming his life. When at last he unearths the truth, it will draw him into the long-buried secret of a ghastly crime, a vengeful spirit...and the lethal price of laying that spirit to rest.

Based on the book of Richard Matheson, this film gives you some added disturbing visual imagery and a fabulous interpretation from the great Kevin Bacon. But if you read the book then the surprise, the plot and the gradual pieces of the puzzle that are progressively unveiled are completely lost. Koepp made a good adaptation and this is a fine work.
Naturally after seeing a few supernatural thrillers, only something that is really over the top makes you say wow, and this isnt one of those. The bumps and creepiness are the usual trademark of this genre, and they are well explored. Also the motive for the start of the strange events is interesting - an innocent hynotism session on a sceptic with unaware but dangerous mind playing.
Some doors should stay closed, knowledge and awareness can bring pain and madness, but ultimately gives you direction and purpose.
The extras includes a video clip, two documentaries with opinions from actors, TV teasers, Trailer and Biofilmographies. The extras also deserve a three star rating.

Kevin Bacon (Flatliners, Tremors, The River Wild, Death Sentence, etc.) is one of my favorite horror / thriller actors. He is very comfortable in creepier fare (hell, he got his start in the original Friday The 13th) like STIR OF ECHOES. Bacon plays a husband and father in Chicago, plunged into a supernatural puzzle after being hypnotized by his sister inlaw (Illeana Douglas). This mans ordinary life is shattered, forcing him to confront hidden, disturbing realities about his neighbors. SOE has equal amounts of mystery, suspense, and tragedy. The story is intelligent and the finalé is satisfying. Highly recommended...

I already had this movie in standard DVD format and enjoyed it enough to buy it again in Blu-ray. It has become a family favorite. It had the right balance of suggestion, as opposed to buckets of blood, to make it a horror film in the classic style.
