Ive always wanted a camcorder. Im not one for lugging around large electronics, so I began looking around for small digital camcorders. I didnt like using the flip, and the specs on this Samsung looked reasonable, so on a whim I ordered it.
All in all Im pretty confused as to why its receiving such poor user reviews. Ive had very little qualms with this camera.
The major complaints are as follows:
-Poor low light quality
-Mediocre pictures
-Annoying touch interface
Im confused; people dump a hundred bucks on a little digital camcorder and expect a $2000 Canon. Ive had no problems with the touch interface (albeit my fingers arent very large), I wouldnt buy a CAMCORDER to take pictures with (seriously, if you want to take pictures buy a camera), and as for low light quality, nowhere is this camcorder advertised for being used in low light environments. If you want to record in the dark, buy a camcorder with nightvision or a built in light. This is a simple little camcorder meant for recording smallish clips during the day.
The only cons that I can see:
-Lack of internal memory
-Wouldnt utilize standard SD cards, only SDHC
-Microphone picks up shuffling, and cant handle low tones
-Is pretty damn light; Im scared to drop it
My cons arent anything Id really rate it down for. Internal storage would only make the cam more expensive and cause more heat. As for the SDHC thing, I dont know if thats a problem with my particular camcorder or the card I tried; I ended up just going to Frys and buying an 8gb SDHC card. I do have to be careful while holding the cam, otherwise it picks up the sounds of my fingers or hand moving. But the majority of those cons are personal, and probably wont affect every user.
If you set your expectations unreasonably high, sure, prepare to be disappointed. But if you look ahead and know what youre buying, Im sure youll be pleased with the HMX-U10.

Except for disadvantage of zero capacity for still pics, I find this an extremely chic camcorder to flaunt! Excellent motion pic clarity, slick to fit into pockets jus like my phone. Most importantly, it is not at all complicated to use. Good battery, light and pretty.

This is going to be used as an alternative to one of the sport cameras for a motorcycle trip.
IT WILL CHARGE OVER USB BUT WILL NOT LET YOU TAKE PICTURES/VIDEOS EVEN IF ATTACHED TO A POWER ONLY ADAPTER since it thinks it is attached to a computer and goes into that mode!
Bizarre power supply connector, so you arent going to find a car charger easily. This also needs to have the compartment open and is up the side so wont be convenient for the time-lapse
20Mbit/s rate compressed and the color channel is the standard lower rez so dont expect it to be identical to a 2Mp jpeg for each frame, but it is still very good - better than full pixel lower rez. Note this will also result in BIG files so will take a long time to upload to YouTube (Im not sure if the one I tried got through - it is processing as I write this).
Whatever software is included is Windows Only but I could do basic editing in the Quicktime viewer app on my Mac using the SD card since the format is standard.
Pros:
Full 1920x1080 HD so theres lots of detail in each frame, and you get all 30 frames each second and can step through them.
Works quite a while on a charge.
Works with common SDHC cards (20Mbit/sec video - Class 6 should work, but I have a class 10).
10Mp picture capability.
MP4 format readable by common programs.
Easy to setup and use
Time Lapse
This model/color/whatever is really inexpensive so it is a really good value.
Compact, lightweight.
Cons:
It is really for daytime outdoors or brightly lit areas only.
The 10Mp was blurry but adequate.
Simple and easy also means not very flexible. HD and medium def, but no low-rez but very long times. Limited time lapse settings.
The two items I mentioned at the top - USB wont power/charge and let you use camera and charge connector is strange.
Component output only.
Power/SD card is one flap, Video/USB together in another.
Flat touch buttons need getting used to.
For my use in videologging my trip, it is almost perfect (only flaw is powering it from my motorcycle which I will do but it will be annoying).
But it has very specific limitations. If they arent a problem the camera will be great. If they are it might be almost useless.

Although the software which comes with this camera is PC only, the video does work with a Mac. Just plug the camera into your Mac with the included USB cord and youll see the cameras disk mount. Copy the MP4 files to your local drive and open them with QuickTime, iMovie, or whatever video App you like. Youll need a relatively new machine to play the video without issues, but that goes for PCs too. HD video takes some processing power.
As far as the camera itself...for $100 its fine. You get what you pay for.

This is a great little camcorder. I suspect that several of the reviews are caused by using computers with insufficient horsepower to deal with the high resolution video.

The camcorder is OK within its limits, used indoors with good lighting and normal sound it does an excellent job.But outside with a lot of varied noise and wind it quickly shows its limitations. The various features make it interesting to experiment with and having removable storage is a big plus, and the small size makes it easy to carry around. Its good for an all around camcorder/camera but dont expect too much from it.

I bought this camcorder a few weeks ago and initially was concerned that the video quality was choppy. Guess what? It was not the camcorder. It was the Apple quick time software I was using on my PC to view the files. Do not use Apple quick time for MP4 format video files - it STINKS.
I tried a couple of other viewing programs and the choppy issue was gone. The video quality on this flash camcorder is absolutely incredible and I already own a Canon full HD camcorder which I love. This little Samsung is a wonderful ultra compact full HD camcorder.
I dont know about the people who say the buttons are hard to use - unless you have big button fingers, they are intuitive and easy to use. I give this camcorder a 10 out of 10 for its category. Its low light performance is not great but I doubt any in this category are - they have no flash and are designed for settings with adequate lighting. It has no zoom but it doesnt need one for my purposes and I dont think many/any in this category do.
I couldnt be much more pleased with this purchase.

I recently purchased this camera for a cruise and subsequent trips to Australia and Europe. It is a $100 video camera that you can shove in a pocket. It will never replace my $350 Sony Handicam.
After recording about 50 hours of video, I have observed the following:
- The video quality is pretty good for use on a computer with a good graphics card, YouTube, and a smaller TV. On a 50 television, it is going to be grainy.
- When filming indoors, it does require a great deal of light.
- When others want to use it, it is completely intuiative and easy to use. In fact, my 85 year-old mother used it to film the contents of her home for insurance and estate purposes with 30 seconds of instructions.
- The provided video editting software is basic. I use Nero instead.
- The outdoor shots have been perfect. But, one must remember, no image stabilization, so you must be smooth with your movements.
- Battery life has been pretty good. I have seen up to 2 hours of shooting on one charge.
- Once you learn the button layouts, I find I use them without looking.

I enthusiastically ordered this camera for my daughter, loved the design and quality feel. But I was completely bummed to find out only after it arrived that it was not Mac compatible. Had to return it. Very disappointing. This should be more clearly displayed in the specs.

The picture quality seems as good as I would have expected. There are a lot of menu options and navigating them is not as intuitive as it could be. Getting to the right menu is still a bit of a mystery to me. There seems to be at least two different menu trees and I dont always get to the tree with the stuff I want to do. Hooking up to a television is requires making several choices on different menus and the documentation options are not as easy to determine as I would like. I think overall the device is very powerful you probably get as many possibilities as you would on many regular camcorders (except for zooming). I had hoped the simplicity part would have been greater.
I had hoped that the device would be simple enough that you could give it to a teacher or one of the students in the class and they could shoot and download or display the info without any outside instruction. I dont think they will be able to. I dont want to imply that it is so difficult that the average person couldnt figure out how to operate it. It is just that there is a learning curve.

I bought this camera before Christmas and purchased it because of the good price and when I got home, I was disappointed with the reviews on your site but decided to give it a try. Seriously, its a great little camera for the price. Except for a few glitches, the camera has been fantastic.
I am a professional dog trainer and compete in dog agility trials. Video taping runs and practice sessions are very important to see what is going on. I stopped bringing my large mini DV camera. I wanted something small that would fit in my training bag and not add bulk.
1) The video quality is very good. I got home realizing I do not have USB2 for transferring and taping anything in HD took too long for my older computer to load to You Tube. I solved that by recording in SD. The quality is better than my mini DV cam.
2) Uploading to the computer or internet is simple. My videos in HD are out of sync but again thats my computer. If I upload them to You Tube, they sync problem goes away.
3) The editing software is horrible. Once our new computer arrives, I will find a better editing software.
4) The zoom is shaky and not fluid. Not really a big deal for my purposes.
5) The buttons that operate the camera are extremely touch sensitive and not. If I try to select a video to the right, I find it going left instead. Its an annoyance and could be better designed but again, not that big of a deal.
This camera is inexpensive and I dont expect it to have broadcast quality video. Seriously, its exactly as advertised. Its a great little camera for the money.

Many consumers who commented on this product seems to be frustrated by certain aspects of the camera.
Although they are somewhat valid, I am not sure if they realize how much they have paid for the product.
Currently, this camcorder is selling for about ~$110 and this product does the perfect job for the price. The image is clear and it is very easy to use.
If you want to buy a camcorder with superior sound quality, etc, then you should upgrade to Samsung camcorders that are in the $500 range. If you want to spend less and just want to capture the moments at decent quality, this camcorder is it!
