I am 62 years old, owning 800 plus cds. I am an audiophile. Portait of a Legend is the best cd that I own. Sam Cooke is the best vocalist of my lifetime. This cd is a must have.

I bought the CD originally because I wanted to get the original version of A Change is gonna come, but I really enjoyed the whole compilation. The sound quality and the linar notes make this a very well worth while package, which justifies the relatively high price completely.

How can you write a review on the excellence of the late, great Sam Cooke. On every song of this cd I enjoyed listening to over and over again. These songs brings back great memories of which my family always played when I was young I knew every word to his songs. From his days of gospel music I enjoyed hearing him sing with the Soul Stirres to his love songs. Truly a well recommended CD for those who love the voice and style of Sam Cooke.

I was walking through an antiques store in Ashland, Oregon when I heard a song from my youth in the 1950s. I had not heard it in decades, but I knew the words and that the singer was Sam Cooke. I ordered this CD when I returned home from the trip, and have played it non-stop ever since. Sam Cooke wrote most of these songs! From Cupid to Change is Gonna Come, this is a wonderful and generous compilation.

I didnt enjoy this Cd the first time that I listened to it because I was just wanting to hear Cookes hits, and there is so much more in this collection. I really enjoyed it the second and the third times because I knew what I was going to get, and I enjoyed developing my interest in all that Sam Cooke could do. I think that I would enjoy listening to this more if all the Gospel was in one section and all of the pop in another and R&B in another. I will definitely use my CD player selection programmer so that I will get one I am looking for and not everything else.

Im listening to this CD right now while sweeping - I cant stop dancing with the broom and singing along! Im 61 years old, and have many CDs of music from my generation, the 50s and 60s. Theyre all good, but this is the one thats easiest to sing along with, so I enjoy it more.
I especially love his biggest hits, You Send Me, Only Sixteen, Cupid, What a Wonderful World, Chain Gang (it scares my dogs when I sing those UHs!), Bring it on Home to Me (I especially love that one!) and, of course, the beautiful, A Change is Gonna Come.
If YOURE an oldie, this is the best oldie CD you can get!

I appreciated a lot this album with the most famous works by Sam Cooke. Im really sorry he died so young. But its wonderful that I can still hear him, so far in time and distance (Italy).

A very solid compilation of some fine R&B.
In addition to owning this, its been given as a gift a couple times and the response has been positive. Its even got some tracks unavailable on other albums.
So many of these songs are sampled - they are good to know by young and old.
The music stands on its own. Its hard to think of any musicians who would not find Sam Cooke to be a giant of the genre.
