I was a little scared about getting Rovio after reading so many bad reviews. But Im glad I did. It does what it promises to do and it works. This web-cam was a great help for me when I went on vacation and left my cat home alone. I could check on her food and water, and talk to her. I was able to operate it from Hawaii by using my Blackberry as a modem to get internet connection to Laptop.
My review is for the used Rovio unit I bought here and then upgraded to firmeware v5.0.
So let me address some negative things about Rovio that were mentioned here by other reviewers.
1. WiFi WORKS fine! Its not a rocket science to set this up, and with latest firmware Rovio supports WPA encryption. It took me about 10 minutes to get it running after I updated firmware.
2. Some people report docking issues. I really dont know what they are talking about, maybe its the older firmware version, but docking JUST ALWAYS WORKS. You do have to be in the same room, within signal reach and Rovio must have clear view of the ceiling where IR beam is projected. My Rovio will loose docking signal when it got to the other end of the living room or into the kitchen. I didnt expect miracles here, all you have to do is drive it until it gets the signal. Then it drives itself. It gets closer to the docking station and from there on it uses its GPS beacon system. Never missed the cradle.
3. Light sensitivity. Yes this is a MAJOR issue with Rovio. My room is in the shade during daylight and it appears as pitch black to Rovio. Built in light doesnt help much. But as long as I move it closer the window or away from the furniture that blocks the light, I can operate it normally. Once you get enough light, image quality is very good. Ive read some people attached battery powered motion activated LED arrays to the Rovio to drive it in the dark.
4. Battery life. Its not super long (about 1.5 hours), but I think its sufficient to check on things.
5. Audio only works with IE. Yes this is true, you will need to use ActiveX controls, so with Firefox and other browsers you wont be able to talk and listen. It doesnt bother me much as Im a Windows user. Video also appears brighter than using IE.
6. Connecting from internet. Setting up access from outside is no different from forwarding ports to other applications like FTP or WebServer. So if you know what you are doing you can easily setup your router to access Rovio from the internet. Theres a small catch tho. IE uses different port for Video. Took me some time to figure out why video wasnt working from IE while it was just fine on Firefox. So if your Rovio is on port 88, you need to open next port as well (89).
7. Crashes. I dont know if anyone mentioned it but my Rovio did crashed a few times in the begining. Every time it happened when I was changing some internal settings (like ports) and once when I rebooted my wireless router. But if I dont touch anything, it works :)

Other good/bad things that I observed during using Rovio for about a month:

1. It drives pretty well on almost any surface. Ive driven it on the hardwood floors, over high carpet, and it had no problem going over thresholds from one room to another. It just never got stuck.
2. Video quality is very good if you have plenty of light.
3. Theres some latency when operating over internet, but if it gets unresponsive lower video quality in the settings.
4. Audio quality is not very good, its mike picks up its own speaker (you hear yourself) so you get lots of feedback. You need to play with mic/speaker sliders to get rid of it.
5. Highest head position is virtually useless as it looks directly up.
6. I could not get e-mail feature to work. Not sure why, SMTP settings are correct.
7. Decorating LED lights on the body, are useless and annoying in the dark. There are hacks to turn them off, but I had no luck with it so far.
8. Rovio is pretty strong, it can move empty boxes that are on the way.
9. Things appear closer than they are on video.
10. Rovio has laser obstacle detection which disabled by default. It works pretty well, especially when Rovio needs to park itself. It just dances around furniture almost never touching it! Be sure to enable it, doesnt look like it affects battery life at all...

Overall Im very happy and impressed by Rovio. Theres great room for improvement. Camera needs get better light sensitivity. Head height adjustment needs to have intermediate position between being up and looking at the ceiling. But lets face it, theres nothing else (especially in this price range) out there thats better than Rovio.

It is a really nice toy, but there is room for improvment. The camera positioning, additional control from the web, and the light need to be brighter. I suggest if they sell a software development kit (SDK) with it so that technical guys can build thier own versions out of it.

I have owned it 3 days at this point. I am working in Iraq as a unmanned vehicle operator. My wifes tech computer level is average or less. She set it up and said it wasnt hard. It works OK in low light (ceiling lights) and awesome in daylight.
It did not work great out of the box. Uploaded the firmware to the most recent beta and now it works pretty good. There is a link to an external robot forum that has A LOT of useful tips/guides, and 3rd party software (though i havent got any 3rd parties to work). You definitely want to listen to these helpful guides!!! This is not a plug it in and go toy, and definitely not a dependable security device! If you want to pull it out of the box and run around, go by a RC car at walmart. It took her about 30 mins to get it working out of the box with my help over skype and a good 30-60 of reading the forums BEFORE HAND. Also you most definitely want to charge it over night before setting it up. This will prolong its battery life. I get about 2 hours out of a full charge.
There is a lot of lag from Iraq with a satellite connection, the more lag the less control via video I have. About 200bps is the min I would say is useful but it works with less. The more BPS the better.
The pathing is iffy at first, but you learn tricks to make it work better, and it always eventually gets to where you want it. Docking has worked pretty good so far, but you definitely want to secure the base.
My house is 95% hardwood floor with one carpeted room. I sometimes have to back up and getting a running start to get over the lip and onto the carpet, but once on it, it does OK. Im pretty sure shag carpet wont let it move.
My only real beef is the audio. The ONLY way to get audio is to use Microsoft internet explorer for it uses an active X window (which doesnt work for me currently, possibly a bandwidth issue). You will NOT get audio with Firefox (which i use) or anything else, however you can set it up as a skype web cam and in conjunction with a skype call you can have conversations.
My huge playful dogs dont know what to think of it. Over all I think for a first generation product under $3,000, (thats right $3,000 is the cheapest your going to find anything like this), its a really great product. I will update you when and if it ever breaks. I say go for it, Im having a lot of fun with it.

Rovio is cool, but beware that audio functionality does not work with Macs (see manual). Also camera is pretty poor, would be much nicer with better camera. Downloaded version 5 firmware which provides WPA support, but firmware still needs to be improved. WPA does work, however it took several tries and was frustrating trying to get it to work because WPA input fields are still set up like prior WEP encryption fields. You can finally get it work, but you just have to keep trying and updating the network settings until it finally gets it. Once it is able to log on to your WPA network, it works well and is fun, but you soon realize that you wish it had a better camera. Also it is kind of a bummer that audio does not work with a MAC.

Its a toy, a little tricky to set up, the manuals are not easy to follow, good user forum, but this is a techy toy, u learn alot about networking, and it can be frustrating to set up. If you expect a toy right out of the box to do everything, its not for you. Its a toy, not a fine tuned machine, but it works. Dont expect too much from it, expect a few bugs, inexact movements to drive, slow response time over the net, be patient in setting it up, and it can be fun, I wont be returning it... its great for watching pets while your away.

Legally Blind Robot

Great Idea. Unfortunately this first Rovio version is Legally Blind .

The default camera is pathetic. You cant use it in a normally illuminated room.

The led light is a bad joke and makes no difference.

Although I was able to control the robot at a remote site I was unable to see any image whatsoever.

No answer so far from tech support after 30 days

Im keeping it because I will reuse the parts in another robot.

Set it up with a better IP camera etc.

I cant recommend it as is.

Unless you plan use it in broad daylight within your LAN , or have plans to strip it and or make some mods to the useless blue leds and camera, dont buy it.

I purchased the Rovio after doing a great deal of research. I have been very pleased with it. I enjoy it, and my children do aswell. It was very easy to setup. The most difficult part of setting it up was making it visible to a computers not on my internal network. This task requires port forwarding, but was easily accomplished with the help of [...] and my user manual for my router. I would recommend Rovio to anyone.

The Rovio is basically a web cam on wheels. The robot comes with more than that. The platform has an on-board derivative of the Evolution Northstar system for localization and homing to give it navigation functionality. The web cam can be used in 3 different poses. The software for windows is pretty good to (tele-) operate the robot. You get clear pictures and good overall control performance. For $300 this is a lot of value and it is fun to operate.

The robot can be operated in ad-hoc wireless mode or connected to a wireless router (infrastructure mode). In ad-hoc mode the platform seems to have connectivity problems in some settings.

The platform has a public API specification. Basically you send URL / web commands to the platform and it responds. For educational settings this is a pretty impressive platform for introductory classes.

Overall a great platform for teaching and basic home use.

Just chiming in because I have one and I think it is a remarkable device. I use it to watch my infant son while I am work. It works very well for me. Just keep in mind that you have to open ports on your router for viewing outside of your network. All of the resources you need to do anything is on the meetrovio forum site.

The specs on this item indicate that it is compatible with a Mac, but that it has to be reset to factory settings to sync it with a Mac. Apparently, the only way to do that is with a PC...then you have to have access to a PC to do that.

Makes it difficult to get started so it can be used.

Rovio is much more than a toy...it is a robot. It is a great learning tool for my son (15 years). It took a bit of work to get set up, or maybe that is just a sign of my wireless networking skills. The documentation could have been better, as I am a Vista user. But, I found help forums online.

Since we have had it set up, it is fun. My son has learnt how the controls work and shows everyone of its remote capabilities.

We dont have the automatic docking working, but give us some time.

Overall, a good, educational product.

I was interested in a Rovio then I read the your site reviews of this product and I considered not buying it because the reviews varied between luke-warm to scathing. Well, I went and bought a Rovio anyway and I am very happy with this product. My Rovio does everything WowWee said it would. If you are on the fence about buying this I would say go for it.

The only bad thing I have to say is the video is dark making it pretty useless at night unless you turn all the lights on in a given room. On the up side, I can check on my pets while I am away and my friends and family can log in and run it around my home. Its a fun toy.

This is a super fun gadget. It does require some computer skills to make the robot available through any computer anywhere in the world. It does require that you do not just follow the instructions blindly and insert the disc.

I had to have my Mac knowledgeable brother set up my Rovio on my new Mac Desktop computer. I am now able to move the Rovio around using the Safari interface, or the Firefox interface, but with these there is no audio to or from the robot. I did access rovio on my windows XP laptop, and I was able to hear noises and voices in the room, and I was able to have my voice heard from my laptop to the rovio. That was way cool. I was even able to access rovio with my Itouch, however I would not use the Itouch for moving the robot around. I just use the Itouch to check out the camera shot while the robot is docked.

There seems to be some talk about battery life in the forums, however, I have never played with mine for over 15 min at a time before I sent it back to its dock. I do notice that the web interface shows some misinformation while the unit is docked. The interface shows that the unit is not charging sometimes. This is incorrect, as once the unit has docked, it does charge, and then, when fully charged, the battery indicator shows that the unit needs charging. Dont believe that indicator.

I have successfully sent email pictures. You do have to set the picture quality every time you address the rovio from a different computer. I have not set up routes for my rovio to follow, as my ceiling is too high to allow for trips too far away from the docking station.

I will update this review as I become more acquainted with my WoeWee Rovio,

I had wanted to buy a Rovio for a while but the bad reviews and high price kept me from doing so. I had been keeping an eye on the firmware updates being released for the device, and right after hearing that the beta firmware now supports WPA Wifi security, I happen to walk into a BJs wholesale club on Christmas Eve and saw the Rovio on sale, so I decided to pick one up. Taking the risky move of uploading the beta firmware, and dealing with some initial battery charging weirdness, my gamble paid off. My kids and I are having a blast with the Rovio. All of us are amazed at the engineering behind the device, especially the way it moves. You do need good lighting in rooms, but after tweaking settings of the device a bit we got great video quality. This type of toy really helps open kids eyes as to the wonder of science and engineering. It wasnt entirely just plug and play for us, you do have to take some time to set it up right, but the payoff for us has been great. As of this writing, the beta firmware was causing jerky movement using the Safari web browser, but FireFox works great. Also if you have an iPhone, check out the free app on the iTunes app store which lets you move your Rovio by simply tiling the iPhone in the direction you want to travel in. They probaly should have waited a little longer before releasing the product, but it seems they are starting to work out many of the issues with firmware updates. Hopefully, the firmware will continue to improve and the price will come down a little and more people will have a positive experience like we have (so far anyway.....)

I bought Rovio from your site about a week ago (at $297. Then they lowered the price to $199 and they (when asked) cheerfully refunded me the difference). In my week of running this machine, Im really pretty pleased. Worth the $199 to me, for sure. Its a great platform.

The good:
1) Docking feature works well. Make sure the navigator isnt pointing at, or close to, another source of infrared.

2) The fact that an API exists (downloaded, but not played with yet), is a good thing. Very good thing. Youll see more software out there.

3) Paths are OK but not great. Ive ordered more nav beacons so I can go all over the house.

4) The cat does not care for it. I ran into him accidently because of Internet lag

The not so good:

1) Camera is not much good in low light. Not totally unusable with the camera brightness turned up, but sure not great. Headlight is way too dim. the mod for moving the blue lights to the front is a great idea. Wheres my Xacto knife?

2) Battery life (about one hour) is low, but acceptable

3) Audio out does not work except with http port set to 80

I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I really have no complaints, am running my Rovio daily on an Iphone, and after 2 months, no issues. Follows paths fine, docks every single time. I would say in lower light it could use a little more illumination, but in daytime is great! I leave lights on at night and its fine

I am not sure how this is offered as a toy.

Rovio is a first leap into remote travel camera security.

it works ad described but you are limited by wifi signal and one level.

If you need to check the status of a home or person while away, this definately does the trick.

well made and responsive overall over the net.

This little toy is not bad at all. I was surprised how good the video quality is, when set to high, and the response time is very good over a 54g network connection.

It does extremely well with remote control. It is really fun to drive it around, and the mic and speakers are adaquete to talk to people you come in contact with.

Where it falls short is with remembering paths. The navigation system has a limited ranged to the base station. So you can forget about saving a path around your entire house until they start releasing beacons that you can buy to plant around your house. Rovio needs these beacons to be able to find his way around automatically.

On a more positive note, as long as Rovio has an active navigation signal, it has never failed to reach his base station for recharging.

Overall this toy is very fun to play with locally or remotely.
