The Punisher walks through the world we all know, a world darkened by war, crime, cruelty and injustice. If youve been a victim of crime and injustice, youd LOVE this movie!

Learn from the hero as he systematically seeks justice by taking out a bunch of scumbags!

There should be more heroes like this in real life!

This movie is about an FBI agent who basically has his entire family murdered in by a enemy. After the police fail to bring the criminals to justice, he is out for blood and decides to take matters into his own hands. If you like action movies then this is a must see.

The soundtrack was engaging and a real positive aspect of this movie.
The plot and dialog were run of the mill hollywood action revenge mindless
cinema. the video transfer deserves high scores for the deep blacks and lack of
video banding.

As as a good action flick goes this one hits the spot, but it is not as good as the old action classic with Doplh Lundgren The Punisher [DVD] [1990].

Ive decided to grade this film according four characteristics: storyline, acting, action, trueness to the The Punisher-theme.

As far storyline goes, this one has a more engaging story than the previous film. It is more realistic, has more interesting characters in it and even manages to put some humor in it.

The acting by the lead Thomas is very good, he does the role very well. The others are alright: the three friends of The Punisher are nice characters that reduces the intensity of The Punisherss role.
The let-down for me is that Travolta doesnt convince me as a super-villain, he is not evil enough...his wife in the film seems more evil than him.

The film is consistent with action, and never gets boring.

The reason I dont rate this 5/5 is because it does not live-up to The Punisher-theme as much as the previous film, the Punisher in this film is simply too soft. I expected him to lash out more brutal punishment but instead he chooses quick deaths for his enemy rather than punishment.
This is where the older film is better, it lives up to the role much better, i.e. it is more brutal.
For me, Dolph is still a better Punisher.

All-in-all though its a very good action film, you wont get bored. So if you like action it is worth seeing.

A strange take on the Marvel comic of the same name. Frank Castle (Thomas Jane) in the comics is at a picnic when his family overhears some gangland stuff going on and promptly get murdered. Perhaps a wife, a few kids.

The film thinks bigger. We have Castle retiring. Just before he does, he gets involved in a sting where the son of a gangster (John Travolta) gets himself killed. Travoltas character does some research and finds that Castle was the disguised sting operator. The wife insists that Castles entire family gets wasted. Thats the entire two clans of the family reunion in Puerto Rico.

About 30 people are killed. A bit overkill, huh?

Thomas Jane plays the role in a bit of a subdued tone rather than an angry vengeful tone. And in some scenes this works. The Punisher, just like in Elektra, does not do well in hand to hand combat. He gets punched, beat, and is wiped along the floor and smashed into concrete floors and walls. He beats The Russian by throwing hot soup in his face.

OK, now Im scared.

The film tries to be lighthearted with the family he lives nearby as neighbors. They look at Frank as family. The slapstick became a bit much. And if some guy is pulling your lip rings out with a pair of pliers, you really are not going to say anything about the whereabouts of Castle? And the little fat friend who sits with a smarmy grin on his face does not make a move or say a word as the kid gets his rings pulled out. Geesh....

Some slapstick as well, comes off fake.

Strange -- why does it take so long for the gang to know where Frank lives? His face was on every TV set in the city and people would point and say, Hey, I know you! Yet half the film is over before they decide to go to his apartment.

The Punisher does punish --especially towards the end of the film where we see hes pretty good setting up booby traps and creating false evidence, tricking Travoltas character into killing his own associates and wife. Clever.

Blowing up every single car in a parking lot was, again, overkill. I mean, really. Travolta does not do bad guy so well. Similar to his portrayal in Broken Arrow, I just dont see him as evil. Saturday Night Fever was not happening here!

I dont want to list every fallacy in this film. I will say some parts were fairly gruesome and sad, the pyrotechnics were loud and unnecessary and the acting was hampered by a script that didnt know where it wanted to go.

And, no Stan Lee walk-on!

Recommended for die-hard fans who want to see a movie loosely based on the Punisher comics series. On par with Catwoman. No, really!

Before I begin, let me state that this Blu-Ray is of decent quality; not sharp the entire picture but most the time and good overall.....and a steal at the current price here at $9.99.

When I saw this at the theater three or four years ago, I was surprised how good this movie was, not stupid as I figured. Apparently a number of people agreed as a sequel was spawned. In other words, this turned out to be a popular film and subsequent DVD.

Its another one of those based-on-a-comic book hero films that seem to be sprouting up all over the past few years. Some of these guys are pretty dark heroes. This is an example. It was more of a pretty brutal revenge-crime movie. Its a rough movie, pure and simple......not the sweetness of Superman and Lois Lane.

Some of the action is ludicrous but the most ridiculous of all - the fight against the huge Russian, is actually the most fun of the action scenes. The rest is just plain mean as the heros entire family gets wiped out by gunman and The Punisher (Thomas Jane) goes after them after almost being killed himself.

A smart aspect of this film was inserting a bit of humor in it, such as the two nerds down the hallway who befriend The Punisher.

The sometimes-juvenile but interesting action scenes, the diverse characters in here and the humor all combine to make this much better than anticipated.

What can I say...action...action...action...great plot..hunk.Thomas Jane!! This is probably not the best movie for the children, but if you like to see the evil, rich and powerful that do evil get it, this IS the movie. He does not get revenge.. he punishes them!! Thomas Jane is excellent in this movie and he is perfect in it. Again, lots of action and a great storyline.

I have never read the Punisher comics but I love dark and nitty gritty movies and this movie has become one of my favorites. This is the kind of movie that you can really identify with the antihero and can trump lots of those ethical debates over vigilante justice. From start to finish this movie will keep you glued. Maybe it didnt win any Oscars but it was a very excellent movie and it deserves the five stars!

I got a copy of The Punisher on Blu-Ray for Christmas. I already had a Standard Format copy I picked up from Costco (which also includes an audio CD disk with 3 tracks from the movie). So this is just reviewing the 2 formats.

There are NO extras on the Blu-ray. NONE! ZERO! ZELCH!!!

The Standard Format release comes with a good contingent of extras. Here is an amended version of what another reviewer, mirasreviews of McLean, VA, wrote back in 2004 of the Extras on the Standard Format release:

This is a nicely loaded disc. Bonus features include 4 featurettes, 2 deleted scenes with directors commentary, a music video for Step Up by Drowning Pool, a trailer for The Punisher video game, and an audio commentary by director Jonathan Hensleigh. The first featurette, Keepin it Real (25 minutes) is about the films stunts. The second featurette, War Journal (30 minutes) is a broad making-of documentary that takes us through pre-production, production, editing and scoring in post-production, and winds up at the films premiere. The third featurette, Army of One (12 minutes) is about The Punishers comic book origins. The last featurette, Drawing Blood Bradstreet Style (5 minutes) focuses on cover artist Tim Bradstreet, who also designed the films theatrical posters and heavily influenced the movies visual style. The films audio commentary by director Jonathan Hensleigh is very good. He speaks clearly and doesnt meander when explaining the decisions he made concerning story, style, characters and cinematography.

The Blu-ray picture quality is slightly better than the up scaled to 1080i my player gives me on my 42 Plasma, but not enough to merit the purchase of a stripped down Blu-ray disk. Maybe you could tell the difference on a 50 or larger screen. The sound is 6.1 instead of the Standards 5.1 and I hear no difference at all through my Bose system.

There is also an extended version on Standard Format (140 min. vs 123min.) which isnt on the Blu-ray either. Do I smell another marketing scam of buy yet another Blu-ray for the extended cut with the extras if say War Zone does well coming???

Bottom line: I have limited shelf space and having now viewed both Formats, the Blu-ray is the one going to Charity!! Ill keep the Standard Format for myself.

No complaints about the movie, Punisher is a great movie. I purchased the Blu-ray hoping that it would look amazing, but it did not. In my opinion, it is not even equal to the dvd version upconverted, so if you are looking to buy this for the simple reason it is Blu-Ray, price shop and see if dvd costs less. You will likely be getting a better product.

I viewed the Blu-ray on a 52 inch Samsung/1080/120hz, Samsung Blu-ray, and Monster 800 HDMI cable.

Another Marvel movie. Not as popular (or as good) as some of the others, but still very enjoyable to watch. It is not very deep and thoughful, but then again, it is not meant to be. It is the classic blow stuff up movie that all guys like. So get it, enjoy it, and then store it for another day when you wanna see things go BOOM

Most critics regarded this 2004 version of The Punisher as somewhat mediocre and lacking in many departments. Well, as usual the critics were wrong. The Punisher is one of those rare action films that not only brings a good story and action to the table, but it demonstrates good acting as well. Thomas Jane stars as former FBI agent Frank Castle. After his final undercover mission ends in the death of the younger son of money launderer Howard Saint (John Travolta), Mr. Saint authorises the termination of Frank Castle and his entire family. Having survived the onsluaght, Castle adopts the identity of The Punisher and begins to systematically destroy Mr. Saints organization piece by piece and Mercenary by Mercenary. Acting is superb with extroardinarilly convincing performances by Jane/Travolta and the entire supporting cast. Action is over the top with some well choreographed action pieces and standoffs. However, the high level of violence in this Marvel film does make it innapropriate for younger viewers. All in all, 2004s The Punisher is pure old school/kiss it goodbye/gritty action without mercy. Dont put the nails in the coffin yet,Marvel got it right with this film.

The Punisher, despite many neutral to negative reviews is--what I believe at least...An Excellent Movie. I Give it 5 stars, its not perfect though. 5 Stars Isnt as Broad as a 10 Scale, Id give it an 8.5 to 9 In that case. The Punisher is the story of a retiring fed, Frank Castle (Thomas Jane) who is acting undercover to bust an arms dealer, and in the process the citys most powerful man Howard Saint(John Travolta)lost his son. He was accidentally killed during the FBIs bust. Saint then scoops out information on Castle and finds out everything about him, then sends for his henchman to kill Castle and his whole family while Castle is in Puerto Rico visiting his parents and other family. After being brutally sabatoged by Howards Thugs and presumed dead, Castle--barely living vowes, not for revenge against Howard and his lackies...but Punishment! This movie delivers great action sequences, a compelling story and one of the more renowned Marvel characters getting their silver screen time. I Do admit the dialogue couldve been slightly better, but it wasnt that bad. The action is what glues you to the seat. This movie is worth owning.

This is a simple piece of entertainment, that with the exception of a few key scenes you would never guess has anything to with Marvel Comics, unless you have read them. The plot as outlined many times before is that special forces guy Frank Castle kills a gangsters son in his last mission and the Gangster (John Travolta) attempts to kill all of Castles family as well as him in revenge. Castle survives and seeks his own revenge.

Its reasonable well done, and certainly entertaining. I was particularly fond of Castles relationship with his oddball neighbours and the loyalty that they both show to each other in the end. However in my view it was let down by a slightly wooden performance from Thomas Jane in the leading role. I never really believed in him... I could imagine this role being done very well by Hugh Jackman. Naturally John Travolta is good in his role.

Look out for Kevin Nash, an ex professional wrestler as The Russian who is almost a foot taller then The Punisher!
