Tales of the Jedi contains 4 different stories telling stories set 5000 years and 4000 years before the first Star Wars film.

The first two (Golden Age of the Sith and Fall of the Sith Empire) are by far the stronger. The writer and artists have a tough challenge of making the Star Wars universe look more primitive but still tell a science fiction story. But they do an excellent job. The starships look like everything from Roman galleys to 19th century steamships. Lightsabers are replaced by crystalline swords and everyone dresses like a character in John Carter on Mars. The story focuses on two hyperspace explorers who chance upon the long-lost Sith Empire. Their discovery leads to the first great war between the Republic and the Stih. The story feels a bit rushed, the final battles are not covered in much detail but overall its a decent story with very interesting ideas and covers an age most Star Wars books do not feature.

The next two stories are somewhat weaker. One deals with three young Jedi sent to deal with a civil war, the other with the wife of a slain Jedi. Unfortunately the second one ends on a cliffhanger, youll have to hunt down the next volume to find out what happens. Theyre not bad, but hardly exceptional.

So for $25 you get 384 pages of quality Star Wars stories, not a bad deal at all.

The Tales of the Jedi were a great series of comics, collected and published as trade paper backs. While these originals can be hard to find now, you can find them all in a two-volume set.

Recommended to all Star Wars fans, and particularly fans of the new Knights of the Old Republic games and comics - this is where all of that got its start.

The Tales of the Jedi provides a great back story to Star Wars if you are a die hard fan.

Star Wars Omnibus: Tales of the Jedi, Vol. 1 is a great read! I recently started to read all the Star Wars comics in order of timeline and this is the first book in the history. It is very enjoyable and sheds light on the early Jedi and Sith adventures. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about the beginnings of Siths infiltration of the Republic.
Collects Tales of the Jedi: Golden Age of the Sith, Fall of the Sith Empire, and Knights of the Old Republic.

I have read both Volumes, although it is a lot of information, there is not enough time to feel empathy with the characters, that only happens at the end of the second volume.
I was expecting kind of how did all start it, it wasnt the case, they talk about a previous great war with the first Sith, but I havent found that book yet.
OTOH I love the fact that I dont have to chase for several little books, just 2 big ones and thats it, I am going to but the next ones once they reach Omnibus flavor.

Im a huge Star Wars fan and love the Knights of the Old Republic games. I recently finished KOTOR 2 for the first time and all the while I was playing it I was thinking of how I want to read the KOTOR comics and the Tales of the Jedi comics that take place before them. I picked up this omnibus and wasnt too excited about the art. I felt I was going to have to just get through it. Im really not a fan of the art is this book, especially being such a big fan of the Republic and Legacy comics which have amazing art! To me Tales started off kind of slow. After about 45 pages though I found myself hooked and unable to put it down. I read through the book in about a week. Then I had to go and buy the second one which Im about half way through now and its even more engrossing. My point is, if youre not a fan of the art, just keep reading, the story is so good youll overlook it and maybe even enjoy the style. If youre a fan of the Knights of the Old Republic video games, this is a great back story and has a similar feel.
